The ARMOR Headquarters Building Awarded Architecture Award

The Armor Protective Packaging® International Corporate Headquarters, located in Howell, Michigan, was the recipient of the Outstanding Architectural Investment Award from the Howell Area Chamber of Commerce. The award is given in recognition of businesses that make positive contributions to the visual landscape of the community. Companies who receive the award are recognized for distinctive architecture, creative design, innovation, and the overall impact of the project.

“We do not give this award out every year,” said Pat Convery, President, Howell Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber only presents it when projects like Armor Protective Packaging merit the award.”

ARMOR made the move to its new corporate headquarters in the fall of 2014. ARMOR renovated an existing building and with the addition of 8,000 square feet of new office space, its headquarters now encompass 45,000 square feet of office, production, inventory and distribution space.

Pictured Above - ARMOR’s lobby hosts several repurposed items including the Porter 200 Industrial Wood Shaper that was transformed into an entryway table. This artifact came from a Michigan farm and the heavily rusted tabletop was soaked in Metal Rescue Rust Remover Bath, while the base was left untouched.

Pictured Above - The ARMORY was designed to serve a dual purpose as both a formal and informal gathering place – a place for meeting and eating!  While it is the company lunch room, it also hosts activities including the ARMOR international sales meeting/training, several community outreach events, and the company’s annual Christmas party.

While the new ARMOR headquarters offer increased space, what makes it worthy of recognition is its distinctive building design and décor. “At ARMOR we produce corrosion management products; we love the concept of preserving and repurposing and we took that same approach when it came to our building,” said David Yancho, Vice President, ARMOR and Workshop Hero™. “Both its external renovation and our internal design and decor marry the past with the present.”

Details that support the ARMOR “everything old is new again” design philosophy include the building’s open ceilings and exposed duct work, intended to add an old-school industrial feel to the building. Office furniture, wall hangings and storage cabinets that are a mix of old and new. Several workspaces and conference rooms host Industrial equipment that has been repurposed and modified from rusty equipment into functional and decorative furniture.

Pictured Above - The large conference room is home to a custom-made table. Old, industrial rollers from a conveyor “picked” from a General Motors automotive factory near Flint Michigan were de-rusted and the rollers were integrated into the wood top of the room’s large meeting table. Mounted on the wall is a vintage 8 foot motorcycle illustration found in a local antique shop.

“Creating a workspace that supports and reflects our company’s product line and culture, while at the same time offers benefits to our community’s landscape, is the perfect blend of form and function,” added Yancho.
