FROM HORSE STABLES TO MILITARY APPROVAL: THE EARLY YEARS 1980-1989

The early 1980’s were hard work for John and Shari Holden and they continued to work to make a “go” of SKS Industries. With a young family to raise and a new business to grow, it became apparent to John that he needed to focus his business if he was going to survive.

As John worked to make inroads with General Motors it became apparent that he needed to prove to the GM decision makers that his VCI product was superior. John took the SKS VCI products and had them tested by the MSU School of Packaging where they passed all testing with flying colors. In addition, in 1983 SKS Industries was granted prestigious approval on the Military Qualified Products List for MIL-PRF-3420. With the test results and military approval in his arsenal, John returned to GM and as he says “What else could they say – they bought our product.”

The military approval and positive test results soon had SKS Industries positioned for business in the Michigan automotive market and helped to propel SKS into the forefront of VCI packaging. Throughout the 1980’s, SKS began to expand into new states and markets successfully.

ARMOR’s celebration of this year’s 35th anniversary is a testament to the hard work, the quality products and the quality results that ARMOR has built its reputation on. Take a look and a listen as John Holden continues to recount the company’s early days in the video below. This is one of several videos we will feature as part of our video retrospective of ARMOR’s history.
