1. Red Rust – the result of heavy exposure to air and moisture, combined many times with contaminate (salt).
2. Yellow Rust – distinguishable in recessed areas of the metal parts/equipment where the rust “runs and drips” (solvated rust).
3. Brown Rust – a drier rust that forms as a result of water and oxygen in the atmosphere and presents as a reddish-brown crust on the metal surface.
4. Black Rust – the result of oxidation in a low oxygen environment; has an appearance similar to that of a black stain.
5. Multiple Forms – dependent on moisture and atmospheric conditions, multiple forms of corrosion can present at one time.
